With a wide range of products manufactured at two ‘state-of-the-art’ food processing facilities in South Wales, Zorba Delicacies is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of soups, own-brand fresh dips and deli sandwich fillings for retailers, wholesalers and food service establishments. The first of Zorba’s facilities was established in Ebbw Vale in 2003 and has the capacity to process approximately 50 tonnes of chick peas per week for its hummus production. Here, two Fulton 60J steam boilers are being used to provide heat for the cooking process and, via a heat exchanger, hot water for the facility’s clean-in-place and wash-down. As part of its recent expansion in Ebbw Vale, Zorba’s new purpose-built soup processing facility needed its own steam raising plant and, as managing director Chris Nash explains, he and the company had no hesitation in specifying another packaged system from Fulton. “I have been using Fulton’s boilers for nearly thirty years so when we started discussing the new facility and its cooking requirements, I knew exactly who I needed to approach.” he says. “You would think by now that I’d know what to expect having specified another Fulton system, but they really do make the whole process look so easy. They partner us from the very beginning to ensure that gas and water supplies are sufficient and all connecting services are installed in the correct location. The boiler and ancillary equipment then arrives on a plinth, is craned into place in the plant room, attached to the required services by their engineers, switched on and, within 20 minutes, is raising the steam we need!” Steam from Fulton’s skid-mounted, gas-fired 60J boiler system is being used to heat Zorba’s six jacketed cooking vessels and provide hot water via a heat exchanger for clean-in-place and wash-down purposes. Each week, the new facility is producing 20 different soups, which Zorba sells to food service outlets via its own Real Soup Company brand. Fulton offers a complete service for the design, manufacture, assembly and commissioning of prefabricated skid-mounted systems and packaged boiler plant rooms from its manufacturing. Its heat transfer systems are built at Fulton’s manufacturing facility in Bristol to BS2790 1992 Class 1 specification and are available for electric, gas, oil and dual-fuel firing, with steam duties from 14 kg/h to 4787 kg/h F&A 100ºC. Its steam and hot water boilers can be skid mounted or packaged within bespoke plant rooms, all of which are designed to customer specifications. A typical packaged system – which includes boiler blowdown separator, feed water and condensate return tank, water treatment and control system with interconnecting mechanical and electrical services – is especially beneficial for projects where on-site work is difficult or limited by time, access is remote or restricted, or security is an important consideration. Summarising, Chris Nash says that in the six years since the two Fulton 60J steam boilers were installed at Zorba’s dips facility, they have never let them down which is, in part, due to the regular maintenance and servicing that is carried out. “In addition to the compulsory annual insurance inspections, we have the boiler and water treatment checked monthly and a full service from our local agent every six months.” he says.
