Hanovia was the star of the Build 4 Asia show in Hong Kong last month. Its booth – shared with local business partner Smartech – attracted hundreds of visitors, all curious to find out more about Hanovia’s UV disinfection technology for swimming pools, spas, hotel water and captured rainwater.
UV is now a well-established technique of swimming pool water treatment, from hydrotherapy pools to full-sized competition pools.
UV is not only an effective method of destroying chlorine-resistant microorganisms like Cryptosporidium and Giardia; it also dramatically improves water quality by destroying chloramines, the unpleasant by-products associated with chlorinated pools.
With over 90 years’ experience in pools and leisure industry, Hanovia’s UV systems are now widely used by indoor pool operators around the world, including Hong Kong’s biggest theme park, Victoria Park, where UV treats all the swimming pools; Nirvana Spa, one of the UK’s most prestigious luxury spas; and the Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital in Adelaide, Australia, where Hanovia UV has transformed the water and air quality for the indoor hydrotherapy pool.
The use of UV for rainwater treatment is another interesting and growing application for the technology, particularly in areas of relatively high rainfall such as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Rainwater is usually used for irrigating lawns and flowers in parks and other public areas.
It is often stored in tanks prior to use, allowing time for microbial growth, so treatment is necessary as the water can subsequently come into contact with people.
Capturing and reusing rainwater in this way not only makes environmental sense – freeing up municipal water supplies for domestic and industrial users – it also makes financial sense for local municipalities.
Backed by dozens of rainwater references in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and with over 70% of the market share of public pools in Hong Kong, many architecture firms, consultants, M&E contractors, developers, hotels and engineers have showed strong interest in Hanovia’s UV technology.
