Variflo Water Technology has launched a new vacuum driven cartridge that dramatically reduces the amount of water that is wasted in domestic and commercial properties. Currently, over 60 percent of tap water goes unused, draining away when a tap is left on for longer than it is needed. The new Variflo Water Technology cartridge eliminates that waste by only releasing the amount of water that is required, whether from a tap, a shower or a drinking fountain. The technology is unique in that it has different operations, depending on the water flow that is required. Users can either create a free water flow by keeping their hand on the tap or use one of two adjustable time functions to allow running water for a pre-determined period. Two time settings are available. A short flow of water between two and thirty seconds can be pre-programmed, as can a longer period of running water, between twenty seconds and four minutes. Functions are selected manually by twisting the tap to adjust the performance of the cartridge. Even when a timed period of running water has been set, the tap can be pulled up and turned off at any point, further reducing the chances of water being wasted. The technology has received public support from Waterwise, the not for profit organisation focused on reducing levels of water consumption in the UK. Waterwise managing director Jacob Tompkins said: “Maintaining water consumption at sustainable levels requires a combination of individual responsibility and technological innovation. The new Variflo technology has great potential to reduce water waste enormously and we welcome its introduction to the UK.” The technology is applicable across a whole host of markets. The fact that no tap can be left running makes it relevant for public premises such as schools and hospitals in the public sector and private sector businesses such as hotels and bars, while it is also very useful in areas such as camping or caravan sites, or in the marine industry, where water storage capacity can be an issue. The cartridge can be retrofitted individually, which opens up huge potential for the domestic market where existing homeowners are looking to reduce water consumption levels. As the cartridge is self-cleaning and does not corrode, it is also of particular use when retrofitting in hard water areas. The Variflo cartridge uses patented technology and is in the final stages of WRAS testing.
