Sodexo, the world’s largest services company, was one of the winners in the Communities and School Development category at the 2013 BALI National Landscaping awards for its partnership with supplier of organic vegetable and herb plants, Rocket Gardens to encourage schools to get children growing organic vegetables and learning about the food they eat.
The partnership sees Sodexo supporting Rocket Gardens’ Dig for the Future project, which encourages schools to get children growing organic vegetables and learning about the food they eat.
Schools nominated through Sodexo receive a planting guide and education pack along with three deliveries over the course of a year, timed to fit around school holidays, these include:
Fruit garden – February and March – a collection of soft fruit bushes, canes and plants Spring garden – April and May – includes a selection of baby plants including lettuces, spinach, carrots, leeks, tomatoes, runner and green beans, courgettes, cabbages and potatoes Autumn garden – September – includes baby plants such as spring onions, pak choi, turnips, broccoli, broad beans to name just a few.
The Rocket Gardens project suited Sodexo’s Horticultural Services business perfectly and saw the Horticultural Services team look at how it could use the partnership to benefit the many communities in which it operates.
Over the last twelve months some 36 schools have received a year’s supply of school gardens courtesy of the Horticultural Services by Sodexo team, with a further 200 schools given the opportunity to receive a year’s supply of schools gardens from the wider Sodexo business.
