Sodexo wins contract to manage all student accommodation at Northumbria University

Sodexo, the world’s largest services company, has won a £8m, 6-year facilities and student services management contract with Northumbria University in Newcastle to manage all of the university’s student accommodation.

Since October 2014 Student Living by Sodexo has provided a range of FM services at the university’s Trinity Square accommodation village, which houses nearly a thousand students. Sodexo manages reception, helpdesk, energy management, mechanical and electrical maintenance, cleaning and horticultural services, among other services at the Gateshead site.

The extended deal means that Sodexo will now manage 3126 beds at sites on and around the Northumbria University campus. As part of the contract around forty employees of the university will transfer to Sodexo

Northumbria University is a research-rich, business-focused university with a global reputation for academic excellence. It is one of the largest universities in the UK with more than 33,000 students from 135 countries.

Damon Kent, Director of Campus Services, said: “This move is part of a positive and strategic response to a changing and increasingly competitive HE sector, and will help ensure we create a sustainable future for Northumbria. Using external providers for specialist non-core services will also allow the University to focus more on teaching, learning and research. This aligns to the Corporate Strategy of continually improving the student experience and providing the best possible learning experience.

“We have been very happy with Sodexo’s management of Trinity Square, which currently enjoys excellent student satisfaction ratings, with 90% of residents ‘very satisfied’ with the accommodation.”

Paul Anstey, CEO Sodexo Universities UK and Ireland, Nordics and Benelux regions said; “We are delighted to be extending our relationship with Northumbria. We have built a strong partnership with the university’s team through our core facilities management offer and a strong focus on improving student experience through pastoral care and support services.

Student Living by Sodexo has really gained momentum in the last three years and this deal confirms Sodexo’s position as a leading service provider in the student accommodation market.”

Sodexo has provided catering, accommodation and facilities management services to the higher education sector for nearly 50 years and continues to grow its Student Living by Sodexo student accommodation business. Currently with a portfolio of over 9,500 beds in 20 locations, its next goal is to be managing 20,000 student beds by 2020.

On 10 March 2016 Sodexo will launch its seventh biennial University Lifestyle Survey. The survey of 2,000 students at 148 universities across the UK identifies and tracks trends in key non-academic areas of university life as experienced by undergraduate students. The findings provide valuable insight into students’ lives and lifestyles, helping Sodexo shape offers and services that improve student experience and provide strategic partnership to its university clients.
