Knauf AMF contributes to an Oasis of calm at new Academy

The new Oasis Academy in Oldham will welcome it’s first students this September. Constructed by Willmott Dixon, it comprises state-of-the-art learning, ICT, community, sports and leisure facilities. Knauf AMF Ceilings were chosen to provide the ceiling solutions throughout this impressive new building in order to meet all the acoustic and aesthetic requirements. David Wood, from Aedas, explains: “The design of the Academy required suspended ceilings that would complement the internal aesthetics as well as provide the correct acoustic environment. The cost-effectiveness of AMF’s products was also a key consideration.” Within the classrooms and corridor areas, Knauf AMF’s Thermatex Alpha ceilings were chosen in various size formats. These provided the correct levels of acoustic absorption and attenuation for key learning environments, as well as helping to reduce noise levels throughout the open-plan breakout areas. The light weight and perforations of the core board in Thermatex Alpha create Class A sound absorption. With a strong white surface, the tiles have a smooth and elegant appearance. For the changing rooms and kitchen areas, Knauf AMF’s Thermatex Thermaclean was specified. These tiles consist of a white vinyl foil laminated to a Thermatex mineral board. Their durable, washable finish makes them ideal for these demanding areas where high hygiene levels are required. The new Academy building features several key spaces, including the central Agora, adjacent hall and dining. For these areas, Knauf AMF’s Thermatex Symetra perforated tile with a shadowline grid was used. “This high quality product gave the correct acoustic environment and visual appearance for such important areas,” added David. Thermatex Symetra is a regularly perforated mineral panel with surface perforations that run diagonally or vertically, creating a geometric effect that is both harmonious and elegant. A wide range of perforation sizes and hole centres can be produced, creating a variety of visual appearances. The choice of perforation patterns, sizes and edge details combined with fire protection and sound absorption give specifiers more scope for contemporary ceiling design. With it’s visually stunning building, it is hoped the extensive new facilities at Oasis Academy will become a generator of improved educational outcomes, community cohesion and wider inclusion.
