Curtain walling by Structura UK Ltd was specified for the £32m development and rebuilding of Teddington School on its existing site for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
The new 2/3-storey, purpose-built complex was designed by BDP and boasts two new teaching blocks, dining and media area, workshop and art block, and sports hall to provide this 1,200-pupil, co-educational comprehensive with a spacious, modern, safe teaching and learning environment.
Working as a sub-contractor to international consultancy and construction company Mace, Structura UK designed, manufactured, supplied and installed a range of high performance, aluminium Schüco FW50+ curtain walling screens, incorporating Schüco ADS65 entrance and fire exit doors, finished in a powder coated dark grey (RAL 7016).
The glazing consists of an inner pane of 6mm clear, toughened and heat soak tested glass with Low ‘E’ Soft Coat to Face 3, a 16mm silver spacer, Argon-filled cavity, and a 6.4mm clear, laminated outer pane.
Specified by the architects to allow the maximum amount of light into the building’s central area, the curtain walling neatly and cleanly fills the space between the elevations while meeting stringent thermal and acoustic properties.
Other features by Structura UK include the clerestorey curtain walling, and the manual and automatic doors to the school’s main entrance.
Part of Structura UK’s £1.1m contract included supplying and installing over 100 Velfac outward opening, composite aluminium and timber windows – and door screens – with solar control glass to some of the classrooms. The low maintenance windows consist of an external aluminium profile to match the curtain walling, and an internal structural frame of laminated pinewood.
