Whilst the beginning of the summer holidays sees classrooms empty of pupils and teachers, it is the start of a busy time for SEH Commercial, an expert in school property improvement projects. And whilst school playgrounds have rung to the refrain of kids singing “We break up, we break down – we don’t care if the school falls down…” for years, SEH Commercial DOES care – and is doing something about it! SEH Commercial has developed and perfected its product and service offering, removing old, ineffective windows, doors, screens and cladding and replacing it with modern state of the art products in PVC-u & aluminium to improve sound and thermal insulation and provide the school with an immediate improvement in the appearance of facilities, a reduction of maintenance costs and helping secure planning regulation approvals. School buildings vary widely across the country and SEH Commercial has worked across the range from historic buildings including some listed buildings to modern constructions. All schools are required to provide a safe, healthy, practical environment in which for school children to learn. SEH Commercial surveys the school, analyses the requirements for product and method, designs a schedule to suit the school and carries out replacement and refurbishment projects which transform the school buildings. Installations like that at Clara Grant Primary School in Bow, east London, where SEH Commercial replaced timber frames in the school dining room, kitchens & rear elevations with PVC-u windows and Teleflex winding gear. Named after a major pioneer of improved school premises and standards in the area from the start of the 20th century, an old log book from the early years of the school states that, ‘everyone was thoroughly delighted with their light, clean and airy school’ and SEH Commercial is proud to be able to carry on the good work. Each school project throws up its own challenges. At the Stuart Headlam School in London, SEH Commercial replaced 50 windows with PVC-u windows. The project involved a complicated method statement; the building is constructed around a central courtyard which is the school’s dining hall and has a glass ceiling. The windows to be replaced were across two floors on the exposed internal wall sections and it was impossible to place scaffolding in an orthodox fashion. Instead, SEH Commercial suspended scaffolding across the top of the building and built the scaffold runs down into the work space. This innovative solution enabled the teams to work in safety above the school dining hall. The result is a transformed building to satisfy all requirements. SEH Commercial also attended St Bernard’s High School in Westcliffe-on-Sea where we replaced old Crittal, single glazed windows, which did not give the best results in terms of function nor appearance with 58 PVC-u and added aluminium doors to North and West block. SEH Commercial’s modern, energy efficient, low-maintenance and aesthetically pleasing PVC-u windows mean the strong performing school now has facilities to match.
