The Clore Learning Centre at Tate Modern has recently undergone a refurbishment programme to enhance the gallery’s learning spaces. Architects Herzog and de Meuron worked closely with Tate’s Learning team to rework the learning spaces and Knauf AMF Ceilings were specified for a number of the meeting and education rooms as part of the overall project. Located next to the Turbine Hall, the Clore Learning Centre includes gallery-like spaces for the display of work, a welcome room full of resources and information, a small cinema, an artist’s studio and a seminar room. Knauf AMF’s Fibrafutura Black ceilings were installed in the meeting and learning rooms by Kent & Roberts Ltd. The 1800x600mm tiles were directly fixed to a concealed metal grid system to provide the requirements of a matt black finish without any visible grid whilst also providing the required sound absorption to control the reverberation time in the space. Roger Gildea, MD of Kent & Roberts Ltd commented: “This was a great project to be involved in and we were delighted to be working with Knauf AMF ceilings again. Their tiles are very easy to cut, making them quicker and easier for us to install and the matt black finish of the Fibrafutura tile has created a really dramatic effect for the new learning spaces.” Fibrafutura is made from wood fibres bound together with cement. As well as a stylish appearance, it has excellent acoustic properties and is strongly impact resistance. It is available in a range of sizes and colours including black, grey, cracked blue glaze, natural, copper mirage and white. The Fibrafutura panels can either be installed as a ceiling or alternatively used as wall panels. The excellent sound absorption properties, combined with a matt black finish and concealed support structure, made Fibrafutura an ideal choice for the refurbishment of the learning rooms at Tate Modern.
